Who Can Join?

Our Junior Orchestra is a vibrant, welcoming space for young musicians aged 7 to 15. It’s the perfect “next step” for students who have mastered their basic notes and are ready to share their music with others!

Key Details

At OSJVS, we believe that young musicians grow through meaningful performance opportunities, expert guidance, and the encouragement of their peers. Our goal is to provide a welcoming and inspiring environment where every musician can develop confidence, build ensemble skills, and discover the joy of sharing music with others.

Age Group

6–13 (recommended). The Junior Orchestra is designed for young musicians who are beginners or who have mastered the fundamentals of their instrument and are ready to begin making music in an ensemble setting. While this age range serves as a general guideline, placement is based primarily on musical readiness, enthusiasm, and commitment rather than age alone.

Skill Level

Basic playing and music-reading skills are recommended. Previous ensemble experience is not required. The Junior Orchestra is a place to learn, grow, and develop musicianship in a supportive setting.

Commitment

A dedication to musical excellence, regular practice, and consistent rehearsal attendance.

Repertoire

Well-known chamber and orchestral repertoire, specially arranged for young musicians, ranging from the Baroque period to contemporary composers

Path to Entry

Prospective members are invited to attend a rehearsal and perform a short prepared piece and a sight-reading excerpt. This allows us to assess each musician’s level and ensure appropriate placement within the ensemble.

Private Instruction

Regular study with a qualified music teacher is strongly recommended.

The heart of this ensemble is about the joy of making music together. We focus on helping our young players:

Build Confidence: We teach the essentials of playing in a team and like following a conductor and listening to their fellow musicians.
Grow Their Skills: We provide a supportive environment where students can turn their individual practice into a group performance.

Performance and Learning Opportunities

Like the Senior Orchestra, the Junior Orchestra offers a wide range of meaningful performance and educational experiences throughout the season.

Members regularly perform in collaboration with libraries, museums, and historic sites throughout the region, presenting both orchestral and chamber music programs. Recent performance venues have included the Greenwood Centre for Living History and Maison Félix-Leclerc.

Students also perform regularly in heritage churches, where keyboard players may explore and perform on historic pipe organs under the guidance and supervision of Dr. Judy Hung. In addition to rehearsals and concerts, the program includes:

Opportunities to perform as soloists and chamber musicians

Masterclasses with guest artists and educators

Workshops with luthiers and instrument specialists

Community outreach concerts and special projects

These experiences provide students with valuable performance opportunities while deepening their understanding of music, history, collaboration, and artistic expression.

Our goal is to provide every young musician with the guidance, opportunities, and encouragement needed to grow artistically, gain confidence, and share the joy of music with the community.
