How to Read Flute Fingering Chart
Filled (solid) circles = press the key / cover the hole
Open circles = leave the key unpressed
The top row shows your left hand (including thumb)
The bottom row shows your right hand
Small circles = side or auxiliary keys (used for certain notes)
The thumb key (back of flute) is shown separately at the top
Keep your fingers close to the keys for better speed and control
The Anatomy of Your Flute
Foot Joint
Houses most of the keys and tone holes. Your right hand covers the lower section while your left hand operates the upper keys.
Head Joint
Contains the embouchure hole where you blow. The cork position affects tuning and should be checked regularly by your teacher.
Body Joint
Houses most of the keys and tone holes. Your right hand covers the lower section while your left hand operates the upper keys.
