How to Read Oboe Fingering Chart
Filled (solid) circles = press the key / cover the hole
Open circles = leave the key unpressed
The top row shows your left hand (including thumb)
The bottom row shows your right hand
Small circles = side or auxiliary keys (used for certain notes)
The thumb keys (back of the oboe) are shown separately at the top
Keep your fingers close to the keys for better speed and control

The Anatomy of Your Oboe
Reed
The part where you blow air to create sound. The double reed vibrates to produce the oboe’s tone.
Upper Joint
The top section of the oboe. Your left hand operates most of the keys here.
Lower Joint
The bottom section of the oboe. Your right hand controls the keys in this section.
Keys
Small metal mechanisms that open and close tone holes to produce different notes.
Bell
The end of the oboe where the sound exits and projects outward.
