Welcome to the Senior Orchestra!
Led by our Founder and Artistic Director, Dr. Judy Hung, this ensemble provides a rewarding opportunity for dedicated students aged 14 and older to further develop their musicianship through the study and performance of authentic chamber and orchestral repertoire ranging from the Baroque era to the present day. Students also develop ensemble skills while fostering artistic growth, technical excellence, and a lifelong appreciation for music.
The program includes both orchestral rehearsals and sectional coaching sessions with experienced local professional musicians, providing students with personalized instruction and valuable ensemble training.
Through rehearsals and performances in a supportive and collaborative environment, students gain meaningful orchestral experience, build confidence, and develop lasting friendships with fellow musicians who share a passion for music.
We are currently accepting musicians who play string instruments (violin, viola, cello, double bass), woodwinds (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon), brass instruments (French horn, trumpet, trombone), and percussion. Students who meet the program requirements are encouraged to apply.
While the program is designed primarily for musicians aged 14 and older, we also welcome musicians of any age who possess the necessary performance and ensemble skills and are eager to learn and contribute to the orchestra.

Program
Membership and Training
Membership in the Senior Orchestra requires a strong commitment to musical excellence, with an entry skill level equivalent to RCM Levels 4 and up.
To help us get to know your playing, prospective members are invited to attend a rehearsal and perform a short prepared piece and a sight-reading excerpt. This allows us to assess each musician’s musical level and ensure appropriate placement within the orchestra.
Key details
- Age Group: 14+ (recommended). While the program is designed primarily for musicians aged 14 and older, exceptions are considered based on musical readiness, ensemble experience, and commitment. We welcome inquiries from both younger and older musicians who are eager to learn and grow with the ensemble.
- Skill Level: Equivalent to RCM Level 4 or higher (music reading skills required).
- Commitment: A dedication to musical excellence, regular practice, and consistent rehearsal attendance.
- Repertoire: Authentic chamber and orchestral repertoire from Baroque to current composers
- Path to Entry: Prospective members are invited to attend a rehearsal and perform a designated piece and a sight-reading excerpt. This allows us to assess each musician’s level and ensure appropriate placement within the ensemble.
- Private Instruction: Regular study with a qualified music teacher is strongly recommended.
At OSJVS, we recognize that every musician develops at a different pace. Our goal is to create an environment where musicians of diverse ages and backgrounds can learn from one another, develop their skills, and grow together through the shared experience of making music.
Leadership
Musical Leadership under Dr. Judy Hung
Rehearsals with Dr. Judy provide high-level training focused on musical phrasing, technique, and ensemble teamwork. As an award-winning educator who has performed across North America, Europe, and Asia, Dr. Judy brings a professional standard to every rehearsal while ensuring students are motivated and supported as they master challenging symphonic repertoire.
These works are specially arranged for their current level, ensuring the music is challenging enough to help them improve their technique and musicality, but accessible enough to keep them feeling inspired and successful.
Performance and Learning Opportunities
The Senior Orchestra offers a wide range of meaningful performance and educational experiences throughout the season.
Members regularly perform in collaboration with libraries and historic sites throughout the region, presenting both orchestral and chamber music programs. Recent performance venues have included the Greenwood Centre for Living History, Maison Trestler, and Maison Félix-Leclerc.
Students also perform regularly in heritage churches, where keyboard players may explore and perform on historic pipe organs under the guidance and supervision of Dr. Judy Hung.
In addition to rehearsals and concerts, the program includes:
- Masterclasses with guest artists and educators
- Workshops with luthiers and instrument specialists
- Chamber music coaching and performances
- Orchestral performances with choir and soloists
- Opportunities to perform as soloists and chamber musicians
- Community outreach concerts and special projects
These experiences provide students with valuable performance opportunities while deepening their understanding of music, history, collaboration, and artistic expression.
