How to Read Alto Fingering Chart
Filled (solid) circles = press the key / cover the hole
Open circles = leave the key unpressed
The top row shows your left hand (including thumb)
The bottom row shows your right hand
Small circles = side or auxiliary keys (used for certain notes)
The thumb key (back of the flute) is shown separately at the top
Keep your fingers close to the keys for better speed and control

The Anatomy of Your Alto Flute
Head Joint
Contains the embouchure hole where you blow. The cork position affects tuning and should be checked regularly.
Body Joint
Houses most of the keys and tone holes. Your left hand operates the upper keys while your right hand controls the lower section.
Foot Joint
The end section of the flute. It contains additional keys that allow you to play lower notes.
Keys
Small metal mechanisms that open and close tone holes to produce different notes.
Embouchure Hole
The opening where you direct your air to create sound.
